Turan’s Thank You

In this personal blog, Turan, who has been coming to us for over 10 years, tells us how the Centre has had a positive impact on his life, and what makes it so special.

My name is Turan. I come from Turkey, and I am a political refugee. I have lived in the UK for the past 14 years.

When I first came to this country, I didn’t speak English. I was arriving in a totally new country with a completely different culture, landscape and climate, not to mention the food!

I needed to learn English urgently. My therapist who worked at the Medical Foundation For the Care of Victims of Torture (Freedom from Torture) told me about The Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants.

So, I went there with my wife Ayse, who is also a political refugee. The centre changed our lives in an extremely positive way. We soon understood that the Islington Centre was not only a language school; it was much more than that.

They work really hard to create a strong and pleasant space for us. When I need help and advice about housing, education or healthcare and when I need emotional support, I know the Centre will be there for me – for us.

The Islington Centre is like my second home; I am happy there.

All courses and activities have had a very beneficial impact on my life. I feel I am not alone, I know we’re not isolated.

Our lifestyles and habits have changed due to the pandemic. Like a lot of people, we had difficult times. In these difficult times, the Islington Centre has always been with us.

Thank you Islington Centre For Refugees and Migrants.
